PLACES OF INTERESTRoss Island. Situated at the mouth of the capacious and picturesque Port Blair harbour, it was the residence of Chief Commissioner during British times. It was also the Administrative Headquarters of the territory. Besides the residence of the Chief Commissioner, it also had a church, a swimming pool, tennis court, a printing press and a cemetery. Spotted deer and peacocks are seen on the Ross Island in abundance. Visitors are permitted to visit Ross Island on all days except Wednesday. A boat service is available from Phoenix bay jetty at 0900 hrs. to take visitors. After a stop over of about 2 hours the boat returns to the departure point. The Naval Coastal Battery (NCB) is also situated on this island.
Corbyn’s Cove. Corbyn’s Cove is a palm fringed beach about 5 Kms from Port Blair. It is an idea place for swimming, surfing, and basking in the sun. It is one of the most frequented spots during weekends. A pavilion with facilities for tea, snacks etc. and fresh water bath is also available at the beach.
Cellular Jail. It will be no exaggeration to say that Andaman Islands are synonymous with the Cellular Jail. Built in 1906, the jail has 698 cells. The jail has been declared as a National Memorial on 11 February 1979. There is also a museum in the jail where one can see the exhibits and visualize the kind of life that prisoners led during their period of incarceration. On account of the irreparable damage caused to it by an earthquake, a portion of the jail had to be demolished. In the place where the demolished portion of the jail stood, now stands the modern GB Pant Government Hospital.
Wandoor Beach. It is situated on the West coast of South Andaman.It is one of the most famous places for diving, swimming and picnic. There is a wooden jetty at Wandoor from where tourists can board the boat for nearby islands of Redskin, Jolly Buoy etc. It was been declared a Marine National Park.
Jolly Buoy Island. About one hour drive from Wandoor by boat will take you to a beautiful lush green Islands rich with sandy beaches and under water coral life. One can enjoy rare view of aquatic life while snorkeling. It is one of the ideal spots for sea bathers.
Viper Island. This historic Island is in close proximity to the Haddo wharf. Before the construction of famous Cellular Jail, this Island was used to harbour freedom fighters. The island had gallows on top of a hillock, where condemned prisoners were hanged. Chiriya Tapu.
Also known as Bird Island, this is the Southern Most tip of South Andaman. This place is famous for the enchanting view that it presents to visitors. A beautiful spot for picnic and line fishing. It is an hour’s drive from Port Blair.
Havelock Island. Havelock Island situated about 54 Kms North East of Port Blair is one of the finest Islands in Andamans which commands beautiful sandy beaches, lush green forest and abundant under water coral life.
Anthropological Museum The museum displays the tools, implements, models& habitats of the aboriginal/tribes in the territory. Their art & handicrafts are other attractions.
Marine Museum. Over 350 species of sea life are carefully preserved here. The exhibits give an insight into the marine life as found in the Andaman waters. Zoological Garden. Called Mini Zoo, it has some of the rare species of animals and birds that are peculiar to these islands.
Mount Harriet. Mount Harriet, located at a height of 1200 feet above sea level, is an ideal place for trekking. It is situated majestically on the North of the harbour, opposite to Chatham Island. Two hours drive from Port Blair by road would take the visitors to Mount Harriet. Ten minutes ride in a motor launch from Marine to Hope Town jetty and a half hour trek from there would also take a visitor to the top of Mount Harriet. The agriculture Department has an orchard there. This is a beautiful picnic spot from where a kaleidoscopic view of the whole of Port Blair could be enjoyed. In olden days, Mount Harriet used to be the summer Headquarters of Chief Commissioner.
Barren Island.
It is the only live volcano in the Indian peninsula. Lying around 120 Km North East of Port Blair in the Andaman Sea, this tiny circular island covers an area of 8 sq Kms. This volcano is alive at present and continues to emit thick smoke and eject red hot stones. In contrast to the name Barren, the island is covered with lush green forest and inhabited by birds, butterflies, insects & mammals.
Water Sports Complex. Situated in the heart of the Port Blair town, this area is a beautiful picnic spot. A water
sports facility is available in the still waters of the Dilthaman tank. The attractions are pedal boats and rowing boats. With the addition of water sports, this area has become a center for attraction especially for student groups and tourists.
Naval Marine Museum ( Samudrika). ‘Samudrika’ means pertaining to Sea, the perpetual treasure house of life. The Naval Museum ‘Samudrika’ was established in the year 1992 to give the visitors an insight to the vast marine eco-system. The museum is unique due to the integrated depiction of life forms. It exhibits and explains various strata of oceanic life through Geology, Geography, Habitation and the history of settlement. This wide spectrum covered makes ‘Samudrika’ the star attraction for the visitors in Port Blair.
