INTEGRATED HEADQUARTERS OF MINISTRY OF DEFENCE (NAVY)
RELIEF ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY INDIAN NAVY
As of today a total of 23 ships, 12 helicopters and 4 fixed wing aircraft of the Indian Navy are engaged in the rehabilitation operations. In addition, the naval bases located near the Tsunami hit areas have been rendering immense contribution towards expediting the process of restoring normalcy. Over 4000 Indian Naval personnel are committed to these operations. Approximately 730 Tons of relief supplies (like Tents, Gensets, Desalination Plants, Blankets, etc), including 446 Tons of provisions and 15 Tons of medicines have been delivered by the naval ships and aircraft to the affected areas.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Op SEA WAVES)
INS Kumbhir and LCU 36 are providing relief assistance at Hut Bay. Ships’ team sprayed anti mosquito and anti fly insecticides in the affected areas.
IN Ships Rajput, Darshak, Magar, Sandhyak, Trinkat, Tillanchang and Sharabh are operating off Nancowry group. INS Darshak undertook aerial recce off Katchal; carried out Check Survey to validate Tide/GPS Station and disembarked relief material at Kardip. INS Sandhayak embarked 131 BSF personnel and their loads.
INS Brahmaputra, off Campbell Bay, has transferred about 2.7 tons of relief material, 03 tons of clothes and 9.3 tons of mineral water were transferred to the Base Camp at Campbell Bay. The ship also undertook aerial recce of Southern Great Nicobar Islands.
IN LCU 34, at Carnicobar, is disembarking relief material.
Assistance to Sri Lanka (Op RAINBOW)
Galle
INS Sarvekshak (Survey ship) is alongside the New Jetty at Galle and coordinating the activities of the medical and relief camps ashore.
Colombo
INS Sutlej (Survey Ship) is deployed at Colombo since 06 Jan 05 for Survey of Colombo harbour.
Trincomalee
IN Ships Jamuna
continues to be deployed at Trincomalee for treatment of patients and coordinating relief operations ashore.Kuchuveli, Vellur and Nelaveli areas and helping to restore normalcy.The following tasks were undertaken on 11 Jan 05:-A technical team comprising 05 officers, 22 senior sailors and 35 junior sailors (Naval Disaster Relief Team), equipped with portable equipment and engineering support tools continues to provide relief assistance to the needy people in
Medical Camps Medical camps conducted by Naval personnel are operating at the following locations:-
Naval Medical Team of four Naval Officers (including Gynae, Surgical specialists)
Medical team with 02 Doctors and 02 Para Medical Assistants continue to be deployed at Galle operating from INS Sarvekshak working in different relief camps in the area with local, civil and military authorities.
One medical team comprising – two medical officers and five Para Medical Assistants at Nelavali in Trincomalee District in coordination with local civil and military authorities. The team treated about 135 patients on 11 Jan 05.
One Indian Army Field Hospital comprising two sections (approx 145 personnel incl 10 Doctors and 80 Para Medicos) deployed at Embilipetiya. Mobile sections are working in different relief camps in the area with local, civil and military authorities. Camps were conducted at Wanduruppa, Nonagama, Kahadamodara and Porondugama. On an average 800 patients are being treated daily.
Medical team comprising six Medical Officers (ex-INS Aditya – two Air Force + three Army + one Naval officers) and twelve Para Medical Assistants is positioned at Batticaloa. 113 Patients were treated at camps at Anwer Mosque, Sivanand School and another 250 patients at Biplanand School.
Aircraft Detachment One Dornier and one Islander aircraft detachment ex- Kochi continues to operate from Colombo.
Relief Assistance to Maldives (Op CASTOR)
ICGS Vigraha and one Dornier aircraft continues to be deployed in Maldives to support relief operations at various islands. The embarkation of relief material ex-Male onboard ICGS Vigraha is in progress.
Indonesia (Op GAMBHIR)
IN Ships Nirupak (Hospital Ship) with Chetak helecopter and Khukri (Corvette) are deployed off Meulaboh (Indonesia) since 05 Jan 05.
Medical Relief One medical camp continues to operate in the premises provided by the Indonesian Army. A total of 186 patients were treated on 11 Jan 05. A facility for Blood grouping, X-Ray, screening and bleeding facility at the camp is planned on 12 Jan 05 as requested by Indonesian Medical Authorities as no such facility is presently existing at Meulaboh.
Situation at Meulaboh Long queues have been reported at Petrol/Gasoline outlets. The sale of fresh provisions and grocery has resumed at a few places in the affected areas. Indonesian volunteers are arriving in large numbers from nearby towns to aid in relief work. The clearance of debris using earth movers is in progress at fast pace.
SUMMARY
The ships, aircraft and personnel of the Indian Navy are working besides other Government Agencies in providing the rehabilitation assistance to the affected people. In addition, the Navy is planning all the necessary logistics support for the sustenance of the ships, aircraft and personnel at the deployment areas for some more days.
