INTEGRATED HEADQUARTERS OF MINISTRY OF DEFENCE (NAVY)
RELIEF ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY INDIAN NAVY
As of today a total of 21 ships, 12 helicopters and 4 fixed wing aircrafts of the Indian Navy are engaged in the rehabilitation operations. In addition, the naval bases located near the Tsunami hit areas have been rendering immense contribution towards expediting the process of restoring normalcy. Over 4000 Indian Naval personnel are committed to these operations. Approximately 730 Tons of relief supplies (like Tents, Gensets, Desalination Plants, Blankets, etc), including 446 Tons of provisions and 15 Tons of medicines have been delivered by the naval ships and aircraft to the affected areas.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Op SEA WAVES)
INLCU 38 continues to provide relief assistance at Hut Bay.
INS Rajput, off Campbell Bay, has undertaken a flying operation for aerial recce of GNI, and evacuated 21 personnel including 08 ladies and 11 children from Shastri Nagar to Campbell Bay and provided a helecopter for the Secy (I&B) at Campbell Bay Detachment.
INS Brahmaputra, at Nancowry, has launched helecopter sorties over Campbell Bay. Relief material has been handed over to base camp and medicines handed over to the representatives of the Primary Health Centre.
INS Magar,off Terassa, and has disembarked medical team ex-INHS Dhanvantri and NGO personnel in Nancowry group.
INS Tillangchang, disembarked three Doctors by boat at Kamorta.
IN LCU 34, at Carnicobar, is providing relief stores emdarked from Port Blair.
Assistance to Sri Lanka (Op RAINBOW)
INS Sharda (OPV), with Chetak helecopter embarked, is at Galle and has undertaken following relief activities:-Galle
Technical Assistance A team of 10 personnel from the ship aided fisheries department in undertaking engine lift, dismantling of engines, capstan repair and patchwork of boats.
Medical Assistance Ship’s Medical Officer working with the Army Medical Team attended to 120 patients at Closenberg camp.
Rehabilitation Work A team from the ship with Indian Army engineers undertook debris clearance at Telavatha and rigging of 25 tents at Ratagama for setting up of a relief camp.Colombo
INS Nirdeshak which was diverted while on passage to Indonesia for relief work, is at Colombo and is disembarking relief supplies. A part of these supplies will be handed over to the Sri Lankan Govt representatives at Ampara
.Trincomalee
INS Jamuna continues to be at Trincomalee for providing medical treatment to the affected people and to coordinate relief operations ashore. Seven officers and 42 sailors from Jamuna have set up relief camp at Kuchuveli. Another relief camp has been setup in Nelaveli.One disaster relief group of 65 naval personnel at SL Naval Base is working in coordination with civil and military authorities. The team is equipped with portable equipment and engineering support tools, continues to be deployed at Trincomalee and provided relief assistance to the needy people in the Kuchuveli, Vellur and Nelaveli areas.
Medical Camps Medical camps conducted by Naval personnel are operating at the following locations:-
A team of four Doctors and four Medical Assistants have attended to 195 patients including 03 acute cases of Hypoglycaemia, kerosene poisoning and road accident. Further, two wells have been completely pumped out and chlorinated.
A Medical Relief Team of one Doctor (Psychiatrist) and one Medical Assistant visited the Trincomalee General Hospital and attended to 25 Psychiatric/post trauma cases.
One medical team at Nelavali visited a school and examined 112 students.
Aircraft Detachment A total of 03:45 hrs were flown towards logistics support to the camp and transfer of personnel.
Relief Assistance to Maldives (Op CASTOR)
ICGS Vigraha and one Dornier aircraft continues to be deployed in Maldives to support relief operations at various islands. The ship with 50 tonnes of relief material ex-Male is heading for relief operations in the Southern Group of Islands.
Indonesia (Op GAMBHIR)
(Hospital Ship) with Chetak helecopter and Khukri (Corvette) are deployed off Meulaboh (Indonesia) since 05 Jan 05. The helo has landed medical relief and camp recovery party. 102 patients were attended.IN Ships Nirupak
SUMMARY
The Indian Navy is continuing its efforts towards augmenting the rehabilitation work in the affected areas. Naval ships are transporting the heavy relief material like generators, vehicles, construction material, etc from the mounting ports to the Tsunami affected areas. Simultaneously, the hydrographic ships of the navy have been tasked to undertake survey of the A & N islands to ascertain the extent of changes in the water levels/depths due to the earthquake.
