RELIEF ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY INDIAN NAVY

RELIEF OPERATION : 31 DEC 04

AN UPDATE

 

          With the additional deployment of three Ships and two aircraft, the forces committed by Indian Navy (for relief operations) has gone upto 32 ships, 21 helicopters, eight Dornier/Islander aircraft and more than 5500 personnel. Ship borne naval helicopters have undertaken over 140 sorties and fixed wing aircraft over 28 sorties in support of relief operations. Additional ships, aircraft and personnel have been prepared with relief supplies and dispatched to turn around the ships in Sri Lanka and Maldives.

Further, to provide relief assistance to Indonesia, ‘Operation Gambhir’ has been launched. Two naval ships INS Nirupak and INS Jamuna have been converted into hospital ships carrying medical supplies and departed for Indonesia and Sri Lanka respectively on the night of 30 Dec 04. Two ships, with a composite team of 40 Army personnel each, have departed Kochi for Sri Lanka .

The following facilities have been created onboard the hospital ships:-

·        Facilities for accommodating 46 patients

·        Four beds for Intensive Care Unit

·        Portable X-ray and lab facilities

·        One additional medical team, surgical units and extra medical stores.
