RELIEF ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY INDIAN NAVY

On an average, a total of 10 ships, 6 helicopters and 2 fixed wing aircraft of the Indian Navy are engaged in the Tsunami rehabilitation operations. In addition, the naval bases located near the Tsunami hit areas have been rendering immense contribution towards expediting the process of restoring normalcy.  Over 1000 Indian Naval personnel are committed to these operations.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Op SEA WAVES)

Diving Assistance 

Survey of India Vessel Sagar Kanya was operating off Great Nicobar Island.     The naval diving team ex–INS Tarasa provided diving assistance to the ship      for the temporary repairs of a minor under water crack.

Disembarkation of Stores

INS Gharial (with Chetak helecopter embarked) anchored at Campbell Bay with 180 tons of relief material embarked.  The ship’s LCAs  and local civil boats were used to unload relief material. Approx 120 tons of relief material was disembarked at Campbell Bay.

Medical Camps

There are presently four camps at Kamorta, with a total strength of 1227 affected people. Relief operations continue under the supervision of a team of doctors co-ordinated by INS Kardip ( the Naval Base located at Kamorta).

Little Andaman

Approximately 50 tons of rations were kept at the Breakwater. The major portion of relief supplies is being sent by Naval ships.

Assistance to Sri Lanka (Op RAINBOW)

Trincomalee

INS Jamuna continues to be deployed at Trincomalee, in her role as Hospital Ship, for coordinating disaster relief task. Reconstruction work at the Sri Lankan Naval Base Vijayabha is in progress. Outpatients were attended to at the Government Hospital.

Galle

INS Taragiri  coordinated the relief operations ashore.

Relief Assistance to Maldives (Op CASTOR)

INS Udaygiri is deployed at Maldives for relief operations at Bolimulah Island (in Mulaku Atoll). A medical camp with two doctors and medicines is also set up.
