SCHOOL OF MEDICAL ASSISTANTS

Introduction: The School of Medical Assistants at Mumbai imparts higher rank professional and specialist training to medical assistants of the Indian Navy and also to Medical sailors from foreign Navies. The School also conducts qualifying courses for selected medical sailors for conversion to officers. Naval recruits who are selected for the medical branch in the Navy on completion of Basic/Sea training report to School of Medical Assistants for training in the medical profession. Professional knowledge is imparted to them to handle all types of emergencies on ship/ashore in war and peace.

History:

1943   - Establishment of Sick Berth School at the Royal Indian Naval Hospital at Sewri.

1946   - Sick Berth School was brought under operational, technical and administrative control of PMO Barracks (present INS Angre) with practical training at MH Colaba.

1954   - Full fledged Sick Berth School established at INHS Asvini on 08 Jul 1954

1964   - Sick Berth School brought under Naval Medical Research and Training Centre (NMRTC), Bombay.

1967   - Sick Berth School renamed as School of Medical Assistants

NMRTC re-designated as Institute of Naval Medicine in Nov 1974

ROLE: The School of Medical Assistants has the following role to play: -

1.     SOMA imparts higher rank professional and Part I / II qualification specialist training to Medical Assistants and conducts SLT (SDM) Qualifying courses for SSB-selected senior sailors of the Indian Navy.  Foreign naval sailors are also received on these courses. First aid training to MARCOS is also conducte.
2.   The School trains the Naval team for the inter-services Indoor Technical Training Competition held periodically at AMC Center and School.
3.
     Under the aegis of the Naval Maritime Academy, SOMA conducts two first aid courses for mariners, and is recognized by the Ministry of Shipping and Surface Transport for the purpose
4.     Ad hoc first aid capsules are also conducted for NCC cadets.
5.     At the organizational level, the School is intimately involved in the annual Marine Medical Conference and the entrance examinations for B.Sc (Nursing) in the Armed Forces and for post-graduate seats in INHS Asvini. 6.     Certificate course in Hygiene & sanitation for Senior sailors of Toppasses branch.
